There is nothing like white sands lapping waves to beat the winter blues. However, the combination of sun, sand, and saltwater can wreak havoc on your skin and hair. Don’t let your winter getaway become a skincare disaster!
Block Out The Sun
Soaking up the sun in small doses feels like it is nourishing your soul. However, there can definitely be too much of this good thing! Protect your skin from the damaging effects of the sun’s rays.
Sunscreen—You are already using sunscreen as part of your daily skincare regimen, right? (Right?!?!) When you are on vacation it is time to step up your game. Since you are going to be exposed to the sun for longer than normal you need to increase your protection. Use a waterproof sunscreen with an SPF 50 and apply 20 minutes before stepping out into the sun (it takes that long for it to be absorbed). Reapply every two hours and immediately after swimming.
Don’t forget your lips! Wear lip balm with sunscreen to prevent them from burning and to keep them hydrated (and kissable).
Sunglasses—Proper eyewear at the beach is essential- especially if you have blue eyes, they need extra protection! The right pair of sunglasses will do three things. First, they will make you look really cool. Second, they will keep you from squinting which in turn will help prevent crow’s feet. Finally, they prevent cataracts and other health issues by blocking the sun’s damaging UV rays.
Wide-brimmed Hat—The bigger and floppier the better! Not only is this look chic and on-trend, it will further shield your face, and hair, from the sun’s harmful rays.
Spending extra time lounging by the pool or basking in the sun on the beach has the unfortunate side effect of sapping your skin (and the rest of your body) of its moisture. Make sure to replace the water you are losing by drinking plenty of water. Feeling thirsty is your body’s way of telling you it is dehydrated, so don’t let it get to that point. Keep a water bottle with you and sip it throughout the day to stay well hydrated.
The combination of sun, salt, and sand are going to void your skin of its hydration. Since your skin will be drier than normal, it is imperative that you soothe your skin back to normal. Don’t further strip moisture from your dermal layer by using harsh soaps. Instead, use a hydrating and natural body wash (try our Rose Hip Cell Renewing Body Wash) and a nourishing all natural face wash. Applying your favorite body + face moisturizers or essential oils directly after showering will help lock in the moisture.
With the all the extra sunscreen and exposure to heat, you will want to cleanse thoroughly so as to not clog your pores and suffer a breakout. Use a gentle exfoliator every three-to-four days to scrub the dirt, sweat, and other obstructions off. But do not go overboard; overzealous exfoliating can be too harsh and cause damage to your skin.
Getting Back to Real Life
Sadly, all vacations must come to an end. Once home you can ease back into your normal routine by pampering yourself and your skin. Continue to hydrate and moisturize your skin and hair to keep the beach glow you acquired. If you brought back a souvenir in the form of a sunburn, treat your skin with pure aloe.
Now would also be a good time to receive a more in-depth treatment to rejuvenate your skin. A visit to Marilyn Monroe Spas can offer a facial or fassage, or come stock your makeup bag with certified organic skincare products to refresh and revive your skin. Now you can start planning your next vacation.
